US NHC sees 70% chance of cyclone over northeastern Gulf of Mexico

(Reuters) - A low pressure system near the northeastern Gulf of Mexico has a 70% chance of developing into a cyclone in the next 48 hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Thursday.

"Environmental conditions remain marginally favorable for additional development, and if these trends continue, a short-lived tropical depression or storm is likely to form as soon as this afternoon," the Miami based forecaster said.

Conditions are expected to become unfavorable by the weekend, with the system likely to remain offshore over the Gulf of Mexico, the NHC said, adding that parts of the Florida peninsula could see heavy rainfall.
