Putin met business leaders to try to attract investment back to Russia – Kremlin

MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin met Russian business leaders this week to encourage them to invest more at home, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

"The discussion was about possible steps to improve the attractiveness of our economy for investment. To create more competitive conditions for completing the process of transferring companies here; redomiciling was actively featured on the agenda," Peskov told reporters in a briefing.

The sanctions imposed since Moscow sent its troops into Ukraine last year have made it much harder for Russian firms to do business with Western countries, and many Western companies have left Russia or are trying to do so.

"The vast majority of entrepreneurs who took part have in one way or another encountered illegal treatment abroad, and now the process of transferring their business to Russian jurisdiction is actively under way, using all available mechanisms," Peskov said.

He said representatives of the government had been present at the talks on Wednesday, along with members of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.
