France’s Macron holds talks with Venezuelan opposition leader Machado

PARIS, April 13 (Reuters) - ‌French President Emmanuel Macron hosted talks ​on Monday in Paris with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado ⁠https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/nobel-peace-prize-winner-maria-corina-machado-revived-venezuelas-opposition-2025-10-10/ and both discussed a democratic transition in her country, he said in a post on X.

"Together, ​we discussed her commitment to freedom and the importance of ‌achieving a democratic, peaceful transition in Venezuela that respects the will of its people," Macron said.

Machado has remained outside ⁠Venezuela since leaving the country to ⁠collect the Nobel Peace Prize last December and is currently visiting various countries in Europe.

She will take part in a gathering at Madrid's downtown Puerta del ‌Sol square on Saturday, she said on X.

Machado is ⁠under investigation in Venezuela and interim ‌president Delcy Rodriguez has said ​Machado should have to "answer" for her support of U.S. military action against Caracas.

In an interview over the weekend ‌with Spanish newspaper El Pais, Rodriguez's ​brother, legislature president ⁠Jorge Rodriguez, said that the crime of calling ‌for foreign intervention was ⁠not included under an recent amnesty law, though he would not be drawn on whether Machado would be arrested ​if she returned ‌to Venezuela.

The United States captured Venezuela's longtime leader Nicolas Maduro ⁠nL6N3Y400O in January.
