Greg Abbott wins Texas Republican gubernatorial primary, US media projects

-

March 3 (Reuters) - ‌Governor Greg Abbott won the Texas Republican gubernatorial primary on Tuesday as he seeks his fourth consecutive term in office, U.S. media projected.

Abbott, 68, ‌a close ally of President Donald Trump, has dominated Texas politics since he was first elected governor in 2014. He has pushed an increasingly conservative agenda that has ‌seen Texas, the most populous GOP-led state, on ‌the vanguard of anti-abortion laws before the Supreme Court knocked down Roe ‌v. Wade, ban immigration "sanctuary cities" in 2017, create the country's ‌biggest school voucher program and loosen gun laws.

Recent polls show Abbott as a strong ‌favorite to win reelection in November.
