MANILA, May 11 (Reuters) - A ā bid to impeach Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte won the ārequired backing of the lower house āon Monday, voting results showed, setting the stage for a trial in the ā Senate that could ā derail her hopes of running for president.
The impeachment complaint was backed by 255 of 318 lawmakers, āsurpassing the oneāthird threshold required.
Duterte is ā accused of misuse of āpublic funds, amassing āunexplained wealth, and of making threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, āthe first lady and āthe former ā house speaker, which she denies. āIf convicted in ā a Senate trial, Duterte would be removed from office and could ābe disqualified āfrom holding office for life.
