A nephew of Birane Mbaye, a fisherman who was one of the survivors of a disastrous attempt to reach Spain last year on a boat that drifted hundreds of miles off course and ended up off the Cape Verde archipelago, runs among laundry and fishing nets in the family's courtyard in Fass Boye, Senegal, March 19, 2024. Earning as little as 2,000 CFA franc (3.28 USD) per day as a fisherman for hire, Mbaye shares a sparsely furnished room with his wife and 1-year-old daughter in his parents' half-built house. They sleep on a mattress on the floor and wash in water from a plastic kettle. Entrenched poverty and tales of fortunes earned abroad drove Mbaye to squeeze onto the boat bound for Spain's Canary Islands, some 1,400 km (870 miles) from their village. REUTERS/Zohra Bensemra
